The active ingredient in every legitimate whitening product — whether strips, trays, or in-office treatment — is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. It works by penetrating enamel and oxidizing the large, dark stain molecules trapped within the dentin beneath, breaking them into smaller, colorless compounds.
Enamel itself is not damaged by properly formulated peroxide at appropriate concentrations. What can be damaged is the pulp — the living nerve tissue inside the tooth — if concentrations are too high or exposure too prolonged. This is why over-the-counter products are limited to lower strengths: the risk of nerve irritation is the guardrail, not the efficacy.
The most common mistake is not over-whitening but using products that are too aggressive too often. Charcoal pastes, baking soda scrubs, and DIY kits sold online fall into this category. They remove surface stains by physically abrading enamel — and enamel does not grow back. Used daily, they create micro-scratches that actually make teeth more prone to staining over time, a cycle that drives people to scrub harder and harder.
Professional whitening — custom trays with a calibrated gel, or in-office treatment with isolation and supervision — delivers predictable results with the lowest risk of sensitivity. Sensitivity during treatment is normal and temporary; it resolves within forty-eight hours of stopping. A desensitizing gel containing potassium nitrate can be used alongside to manage it.
A note on expectations: whitening lightens your teeth but cannot make them glow. The natural color of healthy enamel is somewhere between off-white and light gray. If a result looks artificial, it usually means the shade was pushed beyond what the tooth's structure can honestly reflect.
